ASDA

Over the twenty years we have worked with the team at Spacemate who have solved multiple equipment problems for us here at Asda. The latest problem involved a waste compaction solution that no-one in the Waste industry would tackle. Through their perseverance and ingenuity we now have a solution putting our reverse logistics operation years ahead of our competitors.

From demonstrating the problem to the Spacemate team, until a workable, economical solution was supplied took around 6 months. Enabling Asda to realise the benefits far faster than we thought possible.

We now return cardboard waste to our dedicated waste handling centres using less than 30% of the previously required transport. With zero increase in store hours. Not only vastly reducing the cost of reverese operation . but hughely increasing the available shop and back of store space available for operational use.

As head of the team responsible for all non-retail space in the Asda estate I would strongly recommend Spacemate as a solution provider without hesitation.

What the press say

In my 40 years of logistics reporting I have seen many innovations, particularly regarding forklift trucks, few of which have so dramatically transformed warehouse economics as those connected with Simon Brown and his co-director, Paul Overfield, who inherited their innovation drive from Simon’s father, Freddy Brown, pioneer of man-up order pickers and creator of the world’s first, truly cost-effective, articulating Bendi forklift.

Fred was a visionary when developing the Bendi against much derision and industry conservatism who was to break the first law of marketing, namely by giving the customer what he thought was best for them, rather than what the customers thought was best for their businesses. Such determined perseverance led to the Bendi picking up a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2003.

It is gratifying to see that innovative spirit manifest itself in those new, patented machines now being developed and marketed by Simon and Paul through Translift Bendi. Their first creation was the SpaceMate, an award-winning attachment designed to fit most forklifts, order pickers and stackers to make them suitable for VNA work without compromising a truck’s sideways stability. At about a third of the cost of an articulating truck, the SpaceMate makes a highly cost-effective alternative to buying or renting articulating forklifts for less time-demanding work schedules. Further developments on the SpaceMate, however, were interrupted when ASDA, one of Britain’s top four food retailers, asked Simon and Paul to solve a costly problem with reverse logistics for waste cardboard and polyethylene film wrap.

The result is a unique, patented invention called the SpaceMaker* that compacts waste card/plastic while still in roll cages, based on only a 4 to 1 compression rate, compared with 7-10 to 1 for conventional compactors. Such have been the cost savings in handling, transport and capital employed, plus a good cost recovery for recycled material, that ASDA will be employing 400 SpaceMakers to deliver huge environmental gains, deserving of a ‘green’ accolade. Global potential demand is huge.

The logistics industry should also expect innovations in safer reel and roll handling stackers through an association with Weston Handling.

Often, new, ground-breaking inventions from concept to prototype take many months, if not years, but Simon and Paul’s track record shows that not only can they reduce that time frame to weeks they can also walk the walk by spawning solutions nobody else has thought of.
